Teach Your Ferret to Roll Over

Teach your ferret to roll over within 3 days !

8 in 1 ferret treat

This trick is remarkably easy to learn for almost any ferret. First off, get a hold of your ferret’s favorite treat. Most pet stores have protein based and other ferret oriented treats. Some owners give their ferrets raisins (sparingly !). Raisins tend to have small amounts of sugar which can be detrimental to your ferrets health.

Our trusted stand by over the years has been various products by 8 in 1. Here is an idea to get your started.

So, on to our trick.

Step 1

Teach you ferret to roll over - step 1

Getting Started

Let your baby know that what you have to offer. Obviously, this should be a rare treat and not his every day food. Like I mentioned above, we use special ferret treats or sometimes protein based dog jerky type snacks.

Step 2

Teach you ferret to roll over - step 2

Demonstrate

Now, signal the ferret with both a verbal command as well as your finger movements. Very clearly speak ‘Roll Over’ as your roll your finger in a circular motion in front of his/her face.

Repeat this process 3,4,5,..10 times before offering the treat. Try to set aside some time to execute this practice one or two more times today and tomorrow.

Step 3

Coaching & Rewards

It’s time to gently persuade the ferret what to do. As you speak and motion with your right hand, help the ferret to roll over with your left hand. Be gentle and try rolling them over 4-5 times before offering the treat. Remember to keep speaking and motioning with your right hand.

Also, we want to reward the ferret for any behavior that comes close to what we have in mind. If they drop to the ground, reward them. If they roll on their back, reward them. Keep making the reward process just a tiny bit tougher. You are probably on your second day of practice now … almost there !

Step 4

Teach you ferret to roll over - step 4

Practice

Time for that Ah Ha moment…

Start repeating the practice session from yesterday. Speak and motion with your right hand, roll the ferret with your left. Try doing this for 5 – 10 minutes at a time at various points throughout the day.

At any moment now, your ferret will amaze you. Just when you sit them down to grab their attention, they will look up at you, notice your finger and roll over on their own. Time to grab your friends and show off your talented baby.
